The victorious and team spirit of Mining University is formed in sports.
In order to support the constantly growing interest of students in sports activities, in 2006 the Sports Club Gornyak (Miner) was created at the educational institution. The club organizes sections and sports events. Since its inception, the number of sports complexes, sections and coaches at the university has tripled.
Today the SC Gornyak has 51 coaches, 23 of them are teachers of the Department of Physical Education.
Sport is a lifelong activity. Those who want to feel the energy of movement, but are not ready for serious physical exertion, can also choose an activity to their liking. Mining University offers its students and employees general developmental classes. Trainings in amateur sports sections are of low intensity. They are conducted by teachers-trainers and educational masters of the sports club Gornyak, as well as members of the student sports club.
All sports facilities are open to those interested. Mining University has the greatest variety and number of free sections among all universities in St. Petersburg.

SC Gornyak represents the university at city, national and international competitions. Mining University won three times in the official team event in the Spartakiada among all universities of St. Petersburg in 70 sports. And it is the first owner of the main student sports trophy of St. Petersburg UNIVERSITY CUP for 2012-2013.
Since 2007, the Mining University has been the undisputed leader in the St. Petersburg karate competitions. The team achieved such successes thanks to the work of a top-class coach - master of sports of the Russian Federation, world karate champion Dmitry Savelyev. Mining University is the Student Center for the Development of Martial Arts in Russia.
University teams of kickboxing, powerlifting, women’s boxing and combat sambo also take the first places among the universities of our city are. Cheerleading and sports ballroom dancing teams are multiple champions among St. Petersburg universities. Mining University students consistently win in water tourism competitions. SC Gornyak has a very strong and promising taekwondo section. Its participants are multiple silver medalists of the St. Petersburg championships.
Mining University has its own football league. It consists of 30 teams, which include students and university staff. 320 people take part in football competitions. The season consists of two circles - autumn and spring. The Mining University Football League is the largest intra-university championship in St. Petersburg.

Creating conditions for regular training in the main sports areas is the key task of the SC. The university has an excellent material base so that any university student or employee can find a suitable occupation. Sports facilities are located in three training centers and student residences. They include well-equipped halls for various sports and a swimming pool.
The level of technical equipment of the sports club of Mining University surpasses all existing sports facilities of St. Petersburg universities.
The training center No. 1 has a large playroom with a synthetic surface and an area of 951 sq. meter for playing volleyball, basketball, handball, floor ball; it also has two indoor specialized halls for martial arts, two weightlifting gyms, a darts and billiards hall.
The same training center No. 2 has three gyms for weightlifting training and a dance hall equipped with mirrors and dance floor.
The university has its own indoor universal swimming pool with 4 lanes of 25 meters. It hosts physical education classes, section workouts, recreational swimming sessions and training for those who have no swimming skills at all.
A universal hall with an area of 740 sq. meters for playing volleyball, basketball, handball, floor ball is located in the training center No. 3. There are also two fitness rooms with synthetic turf for aerobics, shaping, stretching, and fitness. The cardio zone is equipped with cardiovascular equipment: treadmills, ellipsoids, exercise bikes, rowing machines. In addition, there are five specialized weightlifting gyms.
