During the first two years, students studying the “Oil and Gas Engineering” speciality, along with the general educational disciplines, get acquainted with their future profession, studying such disciplines as: “History of the development of the oil and gas industry”, “Fundamentals of the oil and gas engineering”, “Chemistry of oil and gas” and “Physics of reservoirs.” The first summer practical training takes place at Mining University training ground in the village of Ulyanovka (40 km away from St. Petersburg). In this practical training, students get acquainted with the devices for drilling rigs and try to independently carry out technological operations when drilling wells. The second practical training takes place in the laboratory of the department of well drilling on the well drilling simulator, where students learn to solve technological troubles that arise during the construction of wells. At the third grade, the study of special disciplines starts: “Technology for drilling oil and gas wells on the shelf”, “Installation and operation of drilling equipment on the shelf”, “Directional directional drilling”, “Complications and accidents in offshore drilling”, etc. After the third year, a hands-on practical training at leading Russian oil and gas companies takes place. Education ends at the end of the fourth year with the defense of a thesis.
