Overview

In the process of training in this specialization, special attention is paid to the study of geological matter at its different levels - crystals, minerals, rocks; using modern laboratory methods. Students learn to explore rocks and ores when searching for, extracting and processing mineral raw materials in mining and ore-dressing enterprises, and acquire skills in working with modern research instruments and methods for processing geological information.

Reasons for choosing a course
  • Knowledge of minerals and rocks is needed in various fields of human activity: searching for gold and diamonds, problems of synthesizing new materials, forensic expertise, jewelry, among others;

  • The opportunity to visit in the course of educational and industrial practices unique geological objects of Russia: from Crimea to Kamchatka;

  • Mastering the rare specialty of a geologist-mineralogist, demanded in Russia and other countries;

  • This sphere combines the features of exact, natural and humanitarian disciplines allowing to find a job both in geology and in related fields (jewelry industry, archeology, criminalist, art history, materials science);

  • The combination of deep practical training with 200-year academic traditions allows graduates to make successful careers in both applied and scientific fields.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Graduates of this specialization can work in geological exploration organizations or geological research institutes, and in mining enterprises, including abroad. Initial positions are: geotechnical engineer, local geologist, mineralogist, researcher, gemologist, forensic expert, etc. In the future, a specialist can become a chief geologist, chief geochemist, head of laboratory, head of the geological department, director of a geological survey organization or a research institute. Among the organizations in which graduates of our specialization currently work are: MMC Norilsk Nickel, OJSC Alrosa, PJSC Polyus, GC PhosAgro, FSUE All-Russian Research Geological Prospecting Institute, VNIIOkeangeologiya, Institute of Precambrian Geology and Geochronology, Polar Sea Geological Exploration Expedition, LLC Argeysi, GK Tellur, etc.
